New And Noteworthy CDs

Mickey Newbury – An American Trilogy

2011 – Drag City

The astonishing work of country/folk legend Mickey Newbury is now available in this definitive 4-CD set, which includes his first three albums remastered, plus an additional album of rare and unreleased recordings.  Though never quite getting all the attention he himself deserved, Mickey’s songs have been covered by Johnny Cash, Tom Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Presley, and Linda Ronstadt, just to name a few.  Delicate and plaintive, this is very sad and potent stuff, but the feeling this music can evoke keeps me coming back.   Lovely CD packaging and art design too.

Nothing is WrongDawes – Nothing Is Wrong

2011 – ATO Records

Sounding like they came straight out of the ‘70s and heavily influenced by folks like The Eagles and Jackson Browne (who is here adding backing vocals on the track Fire Away), Southern California band Dawes,  on this their second album, demonstrate a genuine affection for country rock.   Not many new bands are exploring this genre, and it’s wonderful to hear great new songs that recall another era this well executed.

Carnivale Galactic – Carnivale Electricos

2012 – Anti Records

From the heart of New Orleans comes Galactic, combining elements of hip-hop, R & B, jazz, and even some zydeco to their already funky sound.   Having formed in 1994, this is the tenth album from this group.   Here they continue to stir the pot of their town’s historically rich musical roots and come up with new ideas that are fun and vibrant.

All titles are available through the C.L.A.N. catalog.
