Summer Reading Programs at Jefferson County Library

The 2009 Summer Reading Program for children and teens features reading and events for the entire family. To sign up for the program visit the library or the bookmobile.

Special events will be held throughout the summer at the library. Children and teens do not need to be enrolled in the reading portion of the program to attend these events.

Tuesday, July 7, 2009  -  10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Young readers are invited to strengthen their reading skills by reading aloud for 15 minutes to one of the specially trained dogs in the R.E.A.D program. Space is limited. Sign up at the library or call 385-6544.


Nature Journals with Sidonie Wilson

Tuesday, July 7, 2009  -  2:00 p.m.
This book's cover will bloom as you create flower fairies, gnomes, dragons and ogres. The inside will become a journal for your stories, observations and drawings. Space is limited. Kids ages 5 to 11 are welcome and will be selected on a first come, first served basis. Kids under 8 will need adult assistance.


Rumpelstiltskin Puppet Show

Thursday, July 9, 2009  -  2:00 p.m. and again at 4:00 p.m.
How will the miller's clever daughter turn a pile of straw into gold? Become entranced as the Shaver Marionette Company brings this story alive. Free tickets are required and will be available at the library and on the bookmobile starting June 22nd.


Homeschool Family Picnic and Author Visit with Rain Fordyce

Friday, July 10, 2009  -  12:00 p.m.
Families who home-school -- or those wishing to learn more - are welcome! Bring snacks and blankets and listen to Rain Fordyce read her children's book, I Am Learning All the Time.

Encrypted Scroll Action Body Book with Sidonie Wilson

Tuesday, July 21, 2009  -  2:00 p.m.
Use wire, beads, feathers, paper, fabric and found objects to create a body with moveable arms that has a hidden scroll in its belly. Space is limited. Kids ages 5 to 11 are welcome and will be selected on a first come, first served basis. Kids under 8 will need adult assistance.


Be Creative with Big Words!

Thursday, July 23, 2009  -  2:00 p.m.
Join local author Patrick Jennings to create lawn posters of your own design. Poems, jokes, greetings nonsense and short stories - maybe told over several signs - are all possibilities. If weather permits, we'll work outside!

Join us for interactive Wii gaming, computer games, board games, card games and bingo!

Have fun with body percussion! Aaron Vallat will teach kids and parents how to make music and harmony. Teens are welcome, too!


Insect Safari

Wednesday, July 29, 2009  -  2:00 p.m.
Don Ehlen's Insect Safari comes to Port Hadlock! See thousands of insects and be enchanted by their beauty and unique features. All ages. This event will be held at Chimacum Creek Primary School, located next to the library. Please park in the county library parking lot and walk over. Thanks!


Be Creative with Dance!

Thursday, August 6, 2009  -  2:00 p.m.
Come dressed to move! Local actor and NIA teacher Michelle Hensel will bring the joy of dance to kids and parents. We'll explore dance through music and imagination. Hula, Hip-Hop and Tango your body. Dance on the moon or become a tap dancing worm. No dance experience needed.


End-of-Summer Book Giveaway!

Thursday, August 13, 2009  -  2:00 p.m.
Join us for a party and book giveaway! We'll pull "Book Bucks" from the giant jelly jar until all the books are gone. Come dressed as a favorite character from a book and be eligible for special prizes. Homemade costumes preferred.

Join local artist Joan Wenske in making your own reptilian softie. Hand sewing skills necessary. Beginners welcome. Sign up at the library or call 385-6544.


Wild Animal Drawing

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
July 14, 15 and 16, 2009  -  3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Duct Tape Art

Wednesday, July 22, 2009  -  3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Flip-flops, roses, wallets and more. You'll be amazed what you can make with duct tape.


Paper Booklets

Ongoing Events at Jefferson County Library

Toddler Storytime

Mondays at 10:15 a.m.
A storytime for children ages 12 months to 30 months featuring movement, music, puppets and fingerplays as well as flannel stories and the reading of short books written with toddlers in mind.


Preschool Storytime

Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.
All preschool children are invited to attend. Share stories, songs, and fingerplays!


Homework Spot

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
For the fourth year the Jefferson County Library is offering homework assistance for students in 5th grade though high school. In a friendly and supportive environment, students have a place to work on projects and assignments, surrounded by the rich resources of the library. No reservation required.


Reading Corner

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Tutors are available to help students in 3rd through 5th grades with reading using a variety of library resources. This service is available during the school year. Please call 385-6544 for reservations.
