Jack Nisbet Author of The Collector
Wednesday, October 27, 2010 - 6:30 p.m.
Jack Nisbet first told the story of British explorer David Thompson, who mapped the Columbia River, in his acclaimed Sources of the River. That book set the standard for research and narrative biography for the region. Now Nisbet turns his attention to David Douglas, the premier botanical explorer in the Pacific Northwest and other areas of western North America, in his book The Collector. Douglas' discoveries include hundreds of western plants - most notably the Douglas Fir. From 1825 to 1828, he tromped through forests, slogged through marshes, crossed desserts, climbed mountains and paddled rivers, travelling 7,000 miles throughout the Northwest. If you are a hiker, canoe enthusiast, mountain climber, or wannabe naturalist, The Collector, is for you. Nisbet is also the author of The Mapmakers Eye: David Thompson on the Columbia Plateau (WSU, 2005) and Visible Bones: Journeys Across Time in the Columbia River County (Sasquatch 2007).
